President's Letter

September 11, 2023
Dear Storm Hockey Community:

The 2023-2024 season is nearly here! It's hard to believe, after last week’s hot humid temperatures, we are already talking hockey.

The MRC ice is going in later this month and we have ice time planned for the last week of September. As a volunteer Board of Directors, we feel lucky to have this incredible rink and hockey community to provide our kids with the opportunity to play at all levels.

The Storm will be offering pre-season clinics on September 25, 26 and 28 from 5:30-7:40pm. Players ages 7-14 are eligible to attend. The rink will be divided to separate older and younger players. The focus will be on skating skills, with the second half of the clinic spent playing small area games. The fee for all three clinics is $60 or you can pay a drop in rate of $30 at the rink. All players MUST have a USA Hockey number to participate. Registration is live on Storm’s website!

Our fall Travel Hockey Skills Assessment Session will be held on Thursday, September 28. The skills assessment session is from 5:30-7:40pm and is for any players interested in travel hockey who did not try out in the spring or who would like to be re-evaluated. The purpose of this session is to assess the skill level of players interested in playing travel hockey. Coaches will determine if a player’s skills are appropriate for their age level team and whether or not there is room on a team’s roster. If you choose to have your player take part in a skills assessment for travel, there is an additional tryout fee of $35. (Note: if you paid this fee in the spring and are seeking a re-evaluation you do not need to pay the tryout fee again.)

Registration is now open for both house and travel players. Please be sure to register your players soon, so we can plan for balanced house teams. If your 10U or 12U player is already enrolled on a travel team, House Hockey is part of the package. The 2023-2024 practice schedule for all teams and House Hockey is up on the Storm’s website and practices begin Monday, October 2nd.

Also posted on our website is a new Storm Family Handbook. The handbook includes information on Storm policies and procedures as well as helpful information about volunteer hours and annual raffle ticket sales.

We are excited for a great season. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns. See you soon at the rink!

2023 Theodore Hedstrom Scholarship Winners

On the ice, Theo Hedstrom was not the fastest skater or the hardest shooter but he most certainly was a brave player and a grinder who worked hard for his team. Theo consistently demonstrated the willingness to embrace his role and to help his team in any way the coaches asked. Theo played with joy and humor and contributed to a fun environment on and off the ice. In 2021, at age 14, Theo lost his life in a house fire. Scholarships are awarded in his memory to players who demonstrate his attitude and love of the game.

House - Josie Kelly

10U - Cael Howard

12U -  Whitney Pearson
