About Us

Maine Coast Storm, in partnership with Midcoast Recreation Center, is committed to providing children of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to play hockey.

Development Programs

6U Program (Birth Years 2017-2020)

The 6U program is for children ages 6 and under who are interested in playing hockey. Players are grouped by skill ability and are guided through the fundamental skills of hockey using a variety of formats (games, relay races, ice soccer, etc). Progressive teaching techniques are used to develop skills while having a great experience - the focus is fun and becoming familiar with being on the ice.

8U Program (Birth Years 2015-2016)

The 8U program is for 7 and 8 year olds who have developed basic skating skills. Players are not required to have prior hockey experience, but prior participation in MRC's U6 or Learn to Play program is encouraged. The focus is on continued development of skating and stickhandling skills.

8U players will be divided into evenly-skilled teams, have two skill practices per week and scrimmages amongst each other each Saturdays.

Learn to Play Hockey Program

The Learn to Play Hockey program is for children 8-17 years old who are just starting to play hockey but not ready for competitive play.  The program is designed to establish skating fundamentals and ensure players have an age-appropriate skill set so they can play the game safely and have fun while doing it. Once a player has graduated from this program they can join a team with other players  at their age level.

Storm Team Structure

Storm teams are divided by age groups and skill levels. These skill levels include Tier III and IV travel teams and Tier IV House teams. Tier IV House teams play all their games at MRC, while Tier III and IV travel teams  play throughout Maine, with the potential to travel to tournaments outside the state. The regular season runs from early-October through mid-March.

Tier IV House Program

The Storm offers a Tier IV House program designed for 8-14 year olds who want to play the game at a reduced level of cost and time commitment with players of similar skills and abilities. The season consists of two skill practices per week with the 10U, 12U or 14U teams (depending on the age and skill of the skater) and a minimum of 10 games - all at MRC. Teams  are comprised of both travel and House players of mixed ages to ensure a positive and consistent experience for all players during games.  Players can  join the House program at any time during the season.

Cost: $450

Tier III and IV Travel Program

The Storm also offers competitive Tier III and Tier IV travel teams at the 1OU, 12U,  and 14U levels. The season consists of 2-3 practices per week and 24-26 regular season games (depending on the age group) played at a variety of rinks across the state. Players need to tryout in the spring for the upcoming season and are evaluated on their skating, puck  handling, shooting and body angling skills, as well as their hockey sense. Goalies are evaluated on skating, stance, angles, butterfly and mobility.

We refer to all our programs and teams as THE STORM.
